I’m Breaking Up With Subscription Culture

Let’s get real for a minute: if you’re anything like me, you’ve probably woken up one day, checked your bank app, and thought, “Wait, am I really paying $9.99 a month for a cheese-of-the-month club?” (No judgment if you are—cheese is important.)

Subscription culture has officially gotten out of hand. We’re living in a world where you can subscribe to everything from socks to streaming services to—yep—financial coaching. And while I love a good binge-watch as much as the next person, the subscription model just doesn’t fit the way I want to help you reach your financial goals.

As a part of my 2025 business goals I made the decision to change my pricing model and quietly made the change to reflect this, working closely with affected clients. I figured it’s about time I let the rest of the world (or you all reading this) in on why.

In this blog I’ll talk about my experience, rationale, what it means for you, and how this new approach is designed to make your life (and budget) a little bit easier.

The Subscription Avalanche: Why Enough is Enough

Did you know the average American spends over $200 a month on subscriptions? That’s right—most people underestimate their subscription spending by almost 2x! It’s easy to see how subscriptions sneak up on us. They promise convenience, but before you know it, you’re paying for things you don’t need, don’t use, or—let’s be honest—don’t even remember signing up for (Shoutout to all those Rocket Money Commercials).

And as a financial coach, I just couldn’t be part of the problem. My mission is to help you take control of your money, not add another “set it and forget it” line item to your monthly budget.

Out with the Old: Monthly Coaching Partnerships

For a while, I offered monthly coaching partnerships. The idea was simple: you pay a set fee each month, and we meet virtually to tackle your financial goals together. It worked well for some, but I noticed a few things:

  • Life happens. Sometimes you need more support, sometimes less.

  • Budgets fluctuate. Not everyone wants another recurring payment.

  • Flexibility matters. You should be able to get help when you need it—not just because your subscription says it’s time.

Plus, let’s be honest: who needs another monthly bill to keep track of? Not you. Not me. Not anyone.

In with the New: Fee-Only, Pay-As-You-Go Coaching

So here’s the big news: I’ve switching to a fee-only, pay-as-you-go model. What does that mean for you?

  • No subscriptions. No auto-payments. No surprises.

  • You set the pace. Need a one-time check-in? Great! Want ongoing support? Book sessions as you need them.

  • Total transparency. You know exactly what you’re paying for, and when.

Think of it like financial coaching à la carte. You get exactly what you need, when you need it—no more, no less.

Why This Matters (And Why I’m Excited)

This change isn’t just about pricing—it’s about putting you in the driver’s seat. I want you to feel empowered, not obligated. I want you to reach out when you’re ready, not because your calendar says it’s “coaching time.”

And let’s be honest, anything that helps us all cut down on subscription bloat in the budget is a win in my book.

Ready to Try the New Approach?

If you’re curious about how this new model works—or just want to chat about your own subscription horror stories—I’m here for it. Book a session, drop me a line, or send me your best “I can’t believe I paid for that” story. (Bonus points if it involves a singing fish plaque.)

Here’s to simpler budgets, smarter spending, and a coaching experience that fits your life—not the other way around.

With gratitude (and zero monthly fees),

Dylan

P.S. If you’re still paying for that cheese-of-the-month club, invite me over sometime. I’ll bring the crackers.
